Will my domain name be auctioned off if I allow its registration to expire?
Last Updated: October 14, 2005 2:38 PM

Yes. If a domain registration expires, you have up to 12 days to renew the registration. If you have not renewed the registration after 12 days, the domain enters a 30-day redemption period. During the redemption period, you may renew your domain registration for an additional fee by contacting customer support.

One week into the redemption period, the expired domain—assuming that its registration has not been renewed—is placed into a 10-day domain auction, allowing prospective registrants to bid on the domain. The winner of the auction obtains the domain registration ownership two weeks after the auction end date if the original owner fails to renew the domain by the end of the redemption period.
If you fail to renew your domain name, you agree that Go Daddy may, at its sole discretion, renew your expired domain name on your behalf. If Go Daddy decides to renew your expired domain name on your behalf you will have a Renewal Grace Period during which you may reimburse Go Daddy for the renewal and keep your domain name. The Renewal Grace Period is currently 12 days but subject to change under the terms of Section 2 of this Agreement. If you do not reimburse Go Daddy for the renewal during the Renewal Grace Period your domain name will be placed on Hold and flagged for deletion after which you will have a 30 day redemption period during which you may pay Go Daddy a Redemption fee and redeem your domain name. The Redemption fee is currently $80 USD and is subject to change under the terms of Section 2 of this agreement. If you do not redeem your domain name prior to the end of the 30 day redemption period Go Daddy may, at its sole discretion, delete your domain name or transfer it to another registrant on your behalf.

Whenever a particular Domain Name is not renewed till the expiry date, it would slip into the Renewal Grace Period. This period is of 40 days, during which the Domain Name would be put on a Temporary Commercial Parking Page, which would show that the Domain Name has expired. During this period any website and mails associated with the Domain Name would become non-functional.
If you do not renew the Domain Name in the Renewal Grace Period, then the Domain Name would be Deleted. However, should there be no back-order for the domain name, you would still have the option to Redeem it.
Redeeming a Domain Name is costly, time consuming and manual process. The Redemption Period is of 30 days after the Domain Name is deleted and during this period only the current Registrar of the Domain Name can Redeem the Domain Name.

active(1 - 10 yrs) - Original registrant recieves renewal notices as expiration date approaches. Renew a domain that is about to expire, or set up a domain to auto renew.
expired(29 days) - No response from registrant. Registrar may send delete command to the registry at its discretion. Shortly after the domain name goes past its expiration date the domain name will be deactivated. All domain services including the web page and email will no longer work. The domain may be renewed during this period. Renew an expired domain.
redemption(up to 90 days) - After the 29 day "Expired" period, the name may go to the redemption tab for up to 90 days. The domain may be renewed by it's original owner by paying a service fee plus the normal renewal fees. Renew a domain in redemption
There are two stages of Redemption. After your domains expire, you may find a status of Extended Redemption Grace Period, or Redemption Grace Period. Prices vary according to account and currently range from $160 to $200 per domain name, (plus the cost of the renewal year)  depending upon status. Prices may change at any time.
